OutREACH

OutREACH is our community engagement program that provides wrap-around supports for students, their families, and the community so that they have the information, resources, and experiences they need to succeed.

Community Workshops

We host a community workshop at least once per quarter to educate students, parents and community members on topics such as financial aid, mental health, college readiness, etc. These workshops take place at Rush University Medical Center (600 S. Paulina St., Chicago, IL 60612) and are open to anyone from the community that is interested in learning more about the featured topic. We often host guest speakers who are experts on each topic and provide additional resources for attendees to take home.

Visit our News & Events page to see what community workshops are coming up.

School Site Visits to Rush University Medical Center

Each semester we host a few Chicago schools at Rush University Medical Center for site visits. This is a full-day field trip from 9:00am-2:00pm that includes a STEM/healthcare-related activity, a tour of the hospital and a career panel with a variety of healthcare professionals. We provide all materials, bus transportation between the school and Rush and lunch for all students and chaparones. We can host up to 30 students and we accept elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Scheduling preference is given to school from the Rush Anchor Mission communities.

If you are an educator or school administrator and you are interested in a site visit for your students, please fill out this form. A member of our team will reach out regarding our capacity to schedule a site visit for your school and move forward with scheduling if possible.

After School Writing Workshop

Starting in March 2020 we will be hosting an after school writing workshop open to all Chicago high school students. This is an opportunity for students to work on any writing assignments (i.e. college or internship application essays, resumes, class essays, etc.) with help from our volunteers, Rush students and employees. Snacks will be provided. All workshops will be held at Rush University Medical Center on the last Thursday of the month from 5-7pm. Check out the New & Events page for details on upcoming workshops.

Shadow Days

A few times per year we host a shadow day at Rush University Medical Center for Chicago students to shadow Rush University graduate students or healthcare professionals. Students are matched with a healthcare professional or graduate student based on their career interests and get to spend a day with them one-on-one learning about what it is like to study/work in healthcare, the skills necessary to succeed in certain careers, and other healthcare career opportunities.

At the moment we do not have any upcoming shadow days scheduled, but please check back for future days.

Annual Hats Service Day

To honor the legacy of Reginald "Hats" Adams who started the work of providing STEM education in local schools 30 years ago, we host an annual day of service to give back to the community. It typically takes place on a Saturday in mid-June and is open to all Rush students and employees, our students and their families, and any community members that want to contribute.

Save the date for the  2020 Hats Service Day on Saturday, June 20th. More information to come.
