Developing Workforce Skills

The College Career Pathways program supports youth between 14 - 24 years of age by connecting them with STEM and healthcare career advisors/mentors, college advising, certification and license advising, and further development of workforce skills training, and employment assistance with STEM and healthcare employers in their field.

Making a Difference

Providing assistance and resources to the surrounding West Side Chicago communities is central to Rush's commitment to being a catalyst for community health and vitality by dismantling barriers to health (e.g. disparities in education, employment, healthcare, and other areas), and by promoting health equity both within and outside of Rush.

Center for Community Health Equity Summer Internship

The Center for Community Health Equity is offering an eight-week, 40-hour per week internship program for four highly motivated undergraduate college students currently in their junior or senior year with a strong interest in research, health disparities, and community relations. The summer internship held at Rush University is designed to give relevant and needed exposure to students seeking careers in the health sciences and research. Summer interns will be provided compensation for the experience (up to $5,000 before taxes; partial bi-weekly payment). No travel or housing accommodations are provided.

The internship runs from June 21-August 13, 2021. The application deadline is February 19, 2021. Interviews are anticipated for the week of March 8, 2021; with remote interviews only.

During the internship, students will:

  • Understand the historical structural inequities that impact health outcomes in communities in Chicago, with a focus on West Side communities.
  • Learn how to conduct research in a major research institution through weekly educational sessions, forums, discussion groups, workshops, and field observations.
  • Develop a team-based research project centered on how families from a West Side Chicago community attain educational success.  The work is under the supervision of faculty members in community engagement and health equity. Projects will include a final oral presentation.
  • Experience community engagement in research through community visits and event planning.
  • Attain writing skills necessary to submit an working research paper for review.

College Career Pathways

The College Career Pathways program is offering an eight-week, 32 hours per week internship program for twelve highly motivated undergraduate college students with a strong interest in nursing, radiology & diagnostic, Information Technology (IT), public/community health, and many more healthcare careers. The summer internship is designed to give relevant and needed exposure to hands-on workforce skills, on-the-job training, and provide the opportunity to gain industry-related credentials for those students seeking careers in the health sciences. Interns will be provided compensation for Summer and Winter Break experience. No travel or housing accommodations are provided.

The internship runs June 21-August 13, 2021. The application deadline is February 26, 2021.

During the internship, students will:

  • Gain hand-on learning and training, working alongside medical students, nursing, and doctors in various departments of the medical centers and/or their partner organizations.
  • Connect with STEM and healthcare career mentors for advisement on next steps focused on networking, further development of workforce skills, and employment assistance.
  • Experience community engagement through community visits and event planning.
  • Understand the historical structural inequities that impact health outcomes in communities in Chicago, with a focus on West Side communities.

Center for Excellence on Disparities in HIV and Aging (CEDHA) Summer Internship

The Rush Center for Excellence on Disparities in HIV and Aging (CEDHA) collaborates with the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center to offer an internship program for highly motivated high school and undergraduate college students with a strong interest in health sciences, health disparities, and research. The internship itself is designed for students who are looking to pursue a career in healthcare and provide exposure to aspects of research and community relations in the area of health disparities.

Summer 2021 will mark the nineth year of this 8-week experience, during which students attend weekly educational sessions, forums, discussion groups, and workshops led by health disparities researchers. Students will be immersed in multiple aspects of CEDHA study operations including study assessments and questionnaires, recruitment, community engagement, and data analysis. Ultimately, a student will develop an independent research project with health disparities focus using data collected through the CEDHA study. Projects will be presented to RADC faculty, family, and friends at the conclusion of the internship.

Rush Summer Research Scholars Program

The Rush Summer Research Scholars Program (RSRSP) is a paid, six-week summer program that gives students interested in pursuing a career in medicine the opportunity to conduct research in a vibrant academic medical environment. Scholars will work with established Rush faculty on a new or existing research project in translational, clinical or community research. They will also attend weekly presentations and collaborate with other research and healthcare professionals. At the completion of the program, students will present their results to their peers and mentors.

The program will run from July 6 - August 13, 2021. This program is open to college juniors and seniors or students and graduates that hold a post-baccalaureate degree in the basic sciences. Applicants must be from groups that are underrepresented in medicine and health sciences. The application is open until February 15, 2021.
